Seating Design

Design one functional seating piece inspired by Emirati heritage and traditional crafts. This may include a chair, bench, stool, lounge seating piece, or another single seating design.

Design Inspiration

All submitted designs should draw inspiration from Emirati handicrafts and cultural references.

Students should interpret and abstract the selected inspiration into a contemporary design solution. Direct copying or literal replication of traditional objects, patterns, symbols, or motifs should be avoided.

Required Outputs

  • One (1) seating design only
  • Choose one seating type: chair, bench, stool, lounge seating piece, or another functional seating design

Students should not submit multiple seating options within the same category.

Material Guidelines

Primary
Wood
Secondary
Textiles, natural fibers, glass, acrylic, rope or woven elements, lightweight board materials
Avoid
Heavy reliance on metal, overly complex mechanical systems, fragile materials unsuitable for prototyping

Submission Requirements

Per piece

  • 3D digital model
  • Drawings: top, front, and side views
  • Full dimensions on all views
  • Material mood board
  • Full description of the design inspiration
  • Clear indication of materials and finishes
  • Explanation of how Emirati heritage was interpreted

Poster Submission

One (1) poster at 80 × 80 cm

  • Per submitted design

  • Design visuals
  • Brief description
  • Inspiration images or craft references
  • Material indication
  • Top, front, and side views
  • Full dimensions
  • Clean, minimal layout

Competition Notes

Includes: Chairs, benches, stools, lounge seating pieces, or any single seating design.

Important Notes

  • Original work is required
  • Design should be suitable for 1:20 or 1:10 scale models
  • Selected designs may proceed to 1:1 prototypes and exhibition
  • Poster must not include student name, ID, section, faculty, or university email
  • Direct copying of traditional objects, symbols, patterns, or motifs is not accepted
